Team UC in the 2018 British 10K

For a 7th year, a team of University of California alumni and students ran the Virgin Sport British 10K in central London. The 2018 Team consisted of 35 runners from Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Riverside.

In the months leading up to the race, the UC Running Club organised several training runs around London to help Team UC prepare, from running around the East London Canals to teaming up with UCSD UK Alumni for the Triton 5K back in April.

UC students studying abroad for the summer also ran the race. Among them was Ashley Dubord, who said "Running with the alumni and other students really inspired me to keep going in my first ever 10K. I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to run around London and would do it next year!"

Team UC runs the British 10K in support of study abroad scholarships. Through personal fundraising, donations and a raffle prize draw at the California Cruise, the 2018 team raised over £3,700!

Race day appeared sunny and bright, reminiscent of a Californian summer day.The heat hit a high of 26C (78F), rare for a July day in London. Runners, wearing golden vests that shinned brightly in the sun, expressed a slight anxiety at the unsual warm weather.

But runners persevered and were treated to ice cold beers (as well as water) at The Understudy Pub on Southbank following the conclusion of the race.

Jason Mollring, who ran with Team UC for his 6th year in 2018, said, "Running with Team UC is fun and the UC community creates an environment where alumni can bond together and make a difference. The race allows us to raise money for the UC Education Abroad Programme. It helps students get the opportunity to expand their horizons and experience the world alongside their studies. It's a pleasure to be a part of our team and I'm looking forwward to more runs to come."

Team UC will be back next year in summer 2019. Thinking of joining or looking to stretch your legs? Join The UC Running Club this autumn, with runs beginning again in October.
