Keynote Address: Venki Ramakrishnan, UC San Diego

Venki Ramakrishnan is a Group Leader of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge and President of the Royal Society. He grew up in India where he received his bachelor's degree in physics before moving to the USA in 1971. On obtaining his Ph.D in physics in 1976, he switched to molecular biology and after a long career in the USA he moved to Cambridge in 1999 to work at the LMB.

He is best known for his work on ribosomes, the large molecular complexes in all cells that read genetic information to make proteins.

Ramakrishnan is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina (the German Academy of Sciences) and a Foreign Member of the Indian National Science Academy. He received the Louis-Jeantet Prize for medicine in 2007 and shared the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2009.

Alumni Donor Speaker: Suzanne Wilson-Higgins, UC Los Angeles

Suzanne Wilson-Higgins is the Managing Director of Lion Hudson book publisher based in Oxford. Forty-six years of Lion's published books were acquired in 2017 by the AFD Group headquartered in the Isle of Man who then set-up Lion Hudson Limited in order to continue publishing books by Christian authors for a broad readership. Subject categories include biographies, devotionals, Christian history, bible reference, gift books and fiction. Lion is widely recognized for publishing high quality illustrated books especially illustrated bible stories retold for children.

Suzanne has 30 years’ experience in book publishing, academic library supply and book printing. Her book, The Impact of Print-on-demand on Academic Books was published by Chandos (an imprint of Elsevier) in December 2017.

She has an BA (Music History) cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Masters of Business Administration specializing in International Business from the Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow, is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, sits on the advisory panel for Oxford Brookes Publishing Courses, is a local parish councillor for Gosford & Water Eaton and serves as a trustee for St. Ebbes Church, Hagar International UK and Christian Education.

Scholarship Student Speaker: Jeffrey Tsang, UC Berkeley

Jeffrey Tsang is a junior at UC Berkeley majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He is studying abroad at University College London as an exchange student in Archaeology and Mechanical Engineering. Currently, he is interested in leveraging cutting edge technologies in renewable energy and blockchain to reduce inequality and empower people to improve their lives and the lives of others around them. In his spare time, he enjoys camping, hiking, biking, rowing, and reading.
