Mental Health at the UC campuses
Mental health disorders represent one of the greatest challenges to global health in the 21st century. Many of us have either experienced depression or known someone who has or continues to struggle with a depressive disorder. UCLA psychologists estimate 1-in-4 women, and 1-in-6 men struggle with a depressive disorder. Worldwide, depression is the number one cause of suicide.
There is always hope. The University of California is working to reduce disparities and promote wellness to decrease the number of suicides, which constitute the second leading cause of death for college students. UC is committed to assisting all students with their personal and academic development. One of the many ways UC carries out this mission is by providing comprehensive, timely, culturally appropriate, and effective mental health to all students, faculty and staff.
These funds range in their support for mental health services:
- Providing psychiatric support
- Offering specialized counseling
- Medical treatment and management
- Improve education around mental health
- Ending stigma around mental health and asking for support
- Supporting students and faculty through emergencies and crises
- Suicide prevention
